Bratislava is Slovakia’s political, commercial and financial capital, as well as the country’s wealthiest region. With a population of 414,000, Bratislava’s per capita household income is more than 30 percent higher than Slovakia’s average. High personal income is the engine for Slovakia’s consumption growth.
With its educated workforce, favorable business climate and efficient infrastructure, Bratislava has become a magnet for foreign direct investment in Slovakia. Between 1990 and 2012, Bratislava received 70 percent of Slovakia’s foreign direct investment. The auto industry stood at the forefront of this investment surge. Volkswagen, PSA Peugeot-Citroën and KIA have factories in Slovakia, and Jaguar and Land Rover are building factories there. As a result, Bratislava boasts the world’s highest per capita car production.
Sitting on the Danube River and about one hour’s drive from Vienna, Bratislava has a range of water, road, freight and air connections to Europe’s wealthy interior. The city’s active logistics and distribution industry leverage these connections. The Bratislava region has more than 1.3 million square meters of logistics stock, making it one of the most important logistics markets in Central and Eastern Europe.
